Interesting statistics on cakes

Statistics show that 25% of guests do not eat wedding cake.

The average cost of a wedding cake is $543, according to The Bridal Association of America.

The largest cake ever created weighed 58.08 tons (128238 lbs 8 oz), including 7.35 tons (16209 lbs) of icing.

Approximately 25 million tonnes of bread and 5 million tonnes of biscuits, cakes and pastries are produced per year in Western Europe, although bread consumption varies greatly between states.

According to a survey done by Baking Buyer, 34.7% of bakery sales come from decorated cakes.

Depending mostly on geographical location, a cake decorator employed in a bakery earns between $8 to $15 an hour. An independent cake decorator earns 3 to 7 times more.

Each year in the UK over 1.23 billion pounds are spent on cakes.

A peek inside the average bakery finds cakes, breads, cookies, doughnuts and rolls to be the department’s top five fastest-growing items during the past 12 months.

Among the bakery product categories, upscale dessert cakes and crusty/hearth breads…showed the biggest increases in percentage of in-store bakery sales. Dessert cakes now represent 5 percent, and artisan breads make up more than 11 percent of average in-store bakery sales, the largest percentages to date for each category compared to previous Modern Baking surveys.

The snack market did not exist in the Norwegian market until Stefan Kiristansen saw the void in it and added muffins and yeast-raised donuts to his bakery offerings. In 2009, the company sold 35 million cakes, up considerably from the 450,000 cakes they sold in 1999.

Research by Cakes To Your Door has found that only 10% of grooms choose their wedding cake on their own (we told you it wasn’t revelation). This compares with 30% of women who organise the wedding cake themselves. The statistics also show that although 60% of couples choose their wedding cake together, almost half organise it without their partners’ input.
